ಸಂತೆ = market / open-air or street bazaar
ಒಳಗೊಂದು = one inside
ಮನೆ = house
ಮಾಡಿ = build
ಶಬ್ದ = noise
ನಾಚಿದೊಡೆ = be shy of
ಎಂತಯ್ಯ = how can you

"How can you be shy of (annoyed by) noise if you've built your house right in the middle of a market?"

This is a line from one of my favorite vachanas [1] by Akka Mahadevi.

The whole ವಚನ goes:

My interpretation

The theme of this vachana is stoicism and acceptance IMO. It talks of how you should be able to control your emotions come what may, once you are born in this world (society is better word).

The particular line I've highlighted is also about acceptance.

  • You want the convenience of a house amidst a market, but cannot handle the noise?
  • You want to say something controversial, but cannot take the heat?
  • You want the freedom to do whatever you please, but don't want to deal with the consequences?
  • You want to be loved for who you are, but don't want to accept others for who they are?

You can't have your cake and eat it too!

You cannot unfortunately have it both ways! There IS a cost to things and you often cannot pick only the part that's convenient for you.

That leads to the next part of this Vachana: well, you're born here. Shit happens. There'll be praise, there'll be appreciation, there'll be criticism, there'll be disagreement, and there'll be misunderstanding.

And often, some are deserved, some aren't.

You got to be able to go on without reacting all too much to these things.
You cannot really control the world around you. But what you CAN is how YOU react to it.

You've built your house right in the middle of a market. Maybe stop complaining / whining about it?
You're born in this world with it's good and bad. Maybe stop being angry when things don't always go your way?

ಸ್ಥಿತ = stable / steady / firm
ಪ್ರಜ್ಞತೆ = wisdom / intellect

I'd say this is the closest word for the concept of Stoicism in Kannada.
Describes one's ability to be composed with steadfast wisdom, to be free from fickle-mindedness and intense desires - no matter the external stimuli.

Many many great philosophers have explored this concept and have their own take on how to achieve it.
IMO it often boils down to practising letting go of "अहम्"[2].

My take

Ok here's the thing:
To achieve "equanimity", you have to practise Vairagya, an extreme form of detachment.

To be human is to err.
To be human is to feel.
To be human is to suffer.

It's simply impossible NOT to react to things.
With practice, yes, you can achieve a higher level of being where you are cool calm and collected, and indifferent to things happening around you, but through that you lose a part of yourself.

So, go forth, care, cry, laugh, and I guess, be you?
